Wills & Tax Planning

The importance of making a Will cannot be over-emphasised. If you die without one, certain rules come into force, known as the Intestacy Rules. These rules set out what happens to your estate and are unlikely to distribute your assets where you had hoped.

Making a will provides you with peace of mind, knowing that all your wishes will be fully met and your affairs are in order.

At Owen White & Catlin, we know that sometimes the thought of making a Will can appear morbid but we see it as simply good planning – you will have insured your house and belongings and will probably have a life assurance policy in place – making a will is no differerent.

You also need to consider inheritance tax. If your estate is worth more than £325,000 then your beneficiaries could lose 40% of their inheritance to the Government. In your will there are ways of minimising Inheritance Tax and our specialists will be happy to discuss these with you in detail.
By making a will now it does not mean that your wishes are cast in stone forever; you can make changes to your will at any time in the future.

Powers of Attorney

Some of our clients require powers of attorney and Court of Protection Orders. These are normally granted to enable relatives to administer the affairs of the elderly or infirm who are unable to manage their own affairs. We advise on the most appropriate and cost effective solution and if the role is too onerous for a member of the family then a partner in Owen White & Catlin will be happy to be appointed to help.
